Trains and the Memories They Bring
Trains have played a big role in my life, bringing back so many memories. Years ago, I had to deal with trains at least twice a day during the week—and unfortunately, they would often break down. I clearly remember one time when I had to pull off the road and wait for a train to pass. I even called my job to explain the delay, only to find out they had also been stuck and couldn’t get there an hour before me.
Sounds of the Tracks at Work
When the weather was cool, the office would open its doors to let in fresh air. Since my job was close to the tracks, the passing trains could get pretty loud. I remember once when a train noise annoyed my boss, but honestly, I never minded it as much as he did.
Childhood Flashback: Fourth Grade Field Trip
Let me take you back to a fourth-grade field trip to Virginia, to “Fife of Drum.” We started early—4 a.m.—and I got locked in the bathroom. It took 45 minutes to get me out! By then, all my classmates were already up, and I was just so embarrassed.
Running Away: The Bus Ride to West Virginia
When I was twelve, my mom and I took a long bus ride to West Virginia. We were escaping the authorities who wanted me to testify against my dad for what he had done to me. A kind male passenger offered me the back seat, which was like a bed, making that 22-hour journey a little easier to bear.
New Beginnings in Indiana
After West Virginia, we ended up in Indiana, staying with an old family friend. Tensions flared when one of the children had to give up their bed for us. My room was upstairs, and I slept on the top bunk next to a window. One night, I was lying there with headphones on, listening to Starship’s “We Built This City,” when the window started to vibrate. It was a passing train—and surprisingly, I felt calm and safe, a feeling I’d never really had before after feeling so alone.
Recent Train Memories
On my last birthday, I got to ride the Sunrail commuter train nearby. It was a cool and relaxing experience.
I also remember an Easter spent at a bar on a Harley, right next to the train tracks. Every time a train passed, they’d ring a bell and offer shots—a fun and memorable celebration.
Crossing Tracks Every Day
Nowadays, I drive to work and cross three sets of train tracks. One day, I got stopped at all three crossings—making my trip home take forever. But usually, in the mornings, I’m lucky and avoid any trains.
Trains: A Thread Through My Life
Throughout my life, trains have left a lasting mark. Each memory carries its own story, and trains have become an unforgettable part of my personal history.
